· The U. S. POPULATION IN 1860 was 31,443,000, a 35.6% increase in ten years. The largest city was New York, followed by Philadelphia, Baltimore, Boston and New Orleans. Only 16.1% of the citizenry were city-dwellers.

· IMMIGRATION to the U. S. hit a peak in 1854, with 427,833 foreigners arriving. This number was not topped until 1873.
