Umpire Jim “Author” Rygelski dashes to get a better look at the play at the first base. This situation points out a problem with having only one umpire in 1860 base ball. Curiously, clubs in and around New York City before 1857 played with three officials in the game, an umpire from each club and a referee. St. Louis Perfectos vs. Rock Springs Ground Squirrels.
