Sliding is an interesting topic of discussion within vintage base ball. Would a gentleman have slid into an opposing player in an 1860-era game? Apparently not all players were gentlemen, and after the Civil War, sliding was a standard part of the game, as illustrated here in a game between the New York Mutuals and Woodbury Nine.
